WITH three matches remaining and a Nationwide Conference play-off spot now beyond us, it's natural to start considering what might have been.

In the recent past we have tended to perform better against the better teams and come unstuck against the poorer ones. For a change, this season has seen us beat most of the teams in the bottom half of the table. But we have had a poor record against clubs in the top half, particularly the top five, which has been significant.

Given the position that we started from in pre-season, the players have acquitted themselves very well and have had a real push for a top-five place. But that will all be forgotten in a fortnight's time when we start formulating the squad for next season. And if we are to push for a leading position next season, then we will have to improve on things. We have done OK this season, but we might have done a lot better.

I believe that the quality of our football has been a great deal higher this season. We have a squad who have more than made up for a lack of physical prowess with their ability on the ball. The squad is without doubt the youngest and the most talented we have had since coming into the Conference.

An overriding feature is that the squad has been enjoyable to work with and there has barely been a disciplinary problem.

I have enjoyed my greater involvement in team affairs this season, working alongside Richard O'Kelly who has proven to be a good acquisition for the club. Having talked to Richard about the future, he has enjoyed his involvement - we do not plan to do anything different.

We don't know which players will be made available from other clubs in the summer, but I think there will be a big cutback in staff and players' wages at a number of Football League clubs. We already have a profile of the kind of players that we would be looking for. The nucleus of the squad is here - if we can add to it by signing players who fit our profile, then we can look forward to next season with a great deal of optimism.
