Thirty rail passengers on route from Birmingham to Hereford found themselves stranded at Ledbury Station on Tuesday.
The train they were on, the 14.43 from New Street, turned round and returned to Birmingham, after another train suffered engine failure, causing knock-on delays on the single-track line.
Angry passengers were left waiting for the next service.
Central Trains has apologised and has offered compensation to day return passengers who were affected.
