The son of a well-known Ledbury greengrocer who died suddenly last month says he has been inundated with inquires concerning his father, many from people who did not realise he had died.

Reg Jenkins, who founded his fruit and vegetable shop in The Homend over three decades ago, died on May 15, aged 68.

The funeral was held at St Michael and All Angels' Church, on May 21. But since then, Mr Jenkins' son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Tracy, say that up to 500 people have made inquiries about the popular man, known to the community as "Reg the Veg".

In addition, there have been scores of phone calls from well-wishers.

Mark Jenkins said: "I get the impression that many people don't seem to know that dad has passed on. He was a very popular and well-known figure. We would just like to thank the hundreds of people who have asked about him."

Reg Jenkins first started out in business in 1966, when his fruit and vegetable van became a familiar sight in local streets. In 1968, he opened a shop in New Street and moved to the Homend in 1970, where the business still remains. He retired in 1993, when Mark took over.
