Erdington & Saltley Schools 3 Herefordshire Schools 1

HEREFORDSHIRE Schools Under-14 conceded two late goals as they slipped to a defeat in their inaugural match in the established West Midlands Schools League.

The county made a superb start in their debut appearance in the competition and opened the scoring after just 20 minutes when Peter Wood finished off a slick five-man move.

Herefordshire dominated the first period, with Stephen Smith and James Upcott in outstanding form, and the visitors were denied a second goal on the stroke of half- time when Upcott's free-kick struck the inside of a post.

Erdington immediately hit back and bagged an equaliser from a controversially awarded penalty kick in first-half stoppage time.

Herefordshire soaked up pressure in the opening 20 minutes of the second period and looked set to claim a deserved point until the home side struck twice in the last five minutes.

Herefordshire will play eight matches in their league campaign, with the top two teams in the section qualifying for the semi-finals.
