THE man who put the bubbles in Malvern Water and other soft drinks will be the focus of a talk at Colwall Village Hall on Monday.

John Tyson, quality manager at the Coca-Cola Schweppes factory in the village, will provide an insight into the history of the company and its founder, Jacob Schweppe, in relation to Malvern Water.

Schweppe played a large part in developing the modern method of carbonating waters.

German born, he lived in Geneva where he studied for years to devise a method of carbonating water artificially.

"He did a lot of work to increase the level of carbon dioxide in the water, which was the start of soft drinks as we know them," said Mr Tyson.

Schweppe came over to London and set up a business in Drury Lane, which soon expanded to other parts of the country.

In 1851 he got the concession to sell drinks at the Great Exhibition in London and his business grew from there, although it has changed hands many times over the years.

The Malvern factory was built in 1892 and has been running ever since.

Mr Tyson has been working for Coca-Cola Schweppes for 13 years and is an expert on the history of the company as he is in charge of giving guided tours of the Colwall plant.

Colwall Village Society is hosting the talk at the village hall at 7.30pm. Admission is free.
