THE pressure on car parking spaces at Hereford County Hospital was expensively highlighted for three-year-old Shane Williams and his family last week, writes Philippa May.

The drama began when Shane broke his arm in a fall at playgroup in Ross-on-Wye. Mum Amanda was on a course with a colleague in Hereford, so Shane's father, John, picked him up and drove him to Hereford, where Amanda was to meet them.

"There were no spaces in the hospital car park. I was anxious to get to Shane so I left the car in the Kentucky Fried Chicken car park, which was virtually empty," said Amanda. "When my colleague left, she noticed that my car had been clamped."

Getting the car unclamped cost the Williams family, who live in Symonds Yat, £60.

Parking at the hospital is recognised as 'a source of discontent' and a meeting of Herefordshire Council's Health Scrutiny Committee was today (Thursday) due to be given an update on car parking provision at the hospital.

An earlier inspection of the site had noted that there was provision for additional car parking, 'anticipated to be available in March/April of this year'.
