FIONA Short is following in her father's footsteps after winning a Herefordshire Council by-election for the Liberal Democrats.

The 24-year-old filled the position her dad, David Short, had held for so many years, when she won the St Nicholas Ward unitary and parish seats by more than 150 votes last Thursday.

The by-election was called after Mr Short died in November last year and Fiona's victory has ensured the family name will remain in county politics.

Speaking after the postal election results were revealed, the civil servant said: "It will be really special to carry on my father's work and keep his memory alive in his ward.

"I grew up in his political environment and I was always helping by delivering leaflets and taking messages.

"His 32 years in politics made him a very well-known figure and I have already received lots of support from a very positive public."

As one of the youngest councillors in the country, the former Aylestone High School student is keen to be involved with issues affecting the Whitecross, Broomy Hill and King's Acre areas of the city.

"At the moment I just want to concentrate on local issues, like looking at the possibility of introducing traffic calming measures on Westfaling Street," she explained.

A celebratory party at the Farmers Club, Widemarsh Street, Hereford, was held last Friday when Councillor Short thanked all those who supported her throughout the successful election campaign.

Celebrations were also taking place among council officers after 52.5% of the electorate voted.

Returning officer Neil Pringle said: "A big thank you to everyone who participated in the vote - this was a fantastic response.

"The last time a by-election was held in Herefordshire using the traditional ballot box method, the turnout was 19.35%"
