Police officers have travelled across Europe to interview one of the last people to see Herefordshire heroin addict Rachel Whitear alive.

Wiltshire police officers, led by senior investigating officer Det Chief Supt Paul Howlett, head of Wiltshire Constabulary CID, arrived in Greece last Thursday to speak to the witness.

They believe the person may have important information about Rachel's lifestyle and events in the lead up to her death in an Exmouth bedsit nearly four years ago.

The Police Complaints Authority agreed to supervise the latest investigation after Rachel's parent's, Mick and Pauline Holcroft, issued a complaint over the handling of the original inquiry in May last year.

Speaking from their Ledbury home last Friday, Mrs Holcroft was keen to quash rumours that Rachel's body had been exhumed as part of the investigation.

She told how distressing it was for family members to hear it because they thought they had not been kept informed of developments.

"My husband and I have decided not to give interviews until the end of the investigation by Wiltshire Police," she said. "We don't think it is fair to pass any comments. We have to wait to see whether any inquest is re-opened or not."

Regarding the latest developments she added: "We have been aware that this has been planned for several months - so far we have been very pleased with the investigation."

Rachel's story shocked millions after her parents bravely talked to the Hereford Times of their campaign to educate other youngsters about drugs.
