WITH second-place entertaining first place in the Hereford Times Hereford-shire League Premier Division, a tough battle was expected when Wellington Rangers visited Ewyas Harold on Saturday.

And despite both sides having the chances to secure the three points, in the end honours were left even with a 1-1 draw.

Ewyas Harold had much the better of the first half with the Wellington defence working hard to contain the lively Harold attack.

Pete Lamb and Nathan Scott both went close for Harold before Wellington goalkeeper Bryn Watkins came off his line to save at the feet of Lamb. At the other end, Cory Hyde was denied in similar circumstances by Harold's Stuart Turpin.

The introduction of Wellington's Matt Pugh at half-time quickly made an impact, however, with the substitute firing a shot against the crossbar before seizing on a through ball from Michael Craig to open the scoring with a left-foot shot.

The home side went close through Chris Dzioba and Ben Wheeler before hauling themselves level in rather fortunate circumstances.

Ryan Tabb chased a back pass and when Watkins went to clear, the ball rebounded off the oncoming home forward and landed in the back of the net.

Watkins and Turpin then defied Ryan Hirons and Eddie Wells respectively with good saves before the final opening fell to Pugh who saw a late volley flash wide.

With the two village sides sharing the spoils, Westfields seized the chance to cap their fine run by moving to the top of the table after a 5-0 hammering of Ross United Services.

Young striker Lee Mussell again led the way with his second hat-trick in successive weeks, paving the way for Westfields to extend their run of victories to six.

In a game played at Hereford Leisure Centre as the Ross ground was unfit, Services had little answer to the youthful Westfields outfit for whom Mark Mortlock grabbed the other two goals.

Fownhope have now moved into fourth spot in the table after a convincing 6-0 win at Weston.

Neither side was able to create much in the way of goalscoring opportunities in the first half-hour and the balance of play remained even until Dave Taylor headed in a Steve Winmill corner to give Fownhope the lead.

Just before the interval, John Morris extended the lead when he benefited from some good work by Matt Goodall to finish with a crashing shot.

Jamie Phillips netted with a far post header to put Fownhope firmly in control and Morris took over with three more goals to take his tally to 11 in 12 matches.

First he raced past his full-back to fire in a shot which carried too much pace for the home goalkeeper and then successfully converted two penalty kicks after first Morris himself and then Blacky Smith had been brought down.

There now seems to be no stopping Leominster who scored their second successive success - and only their second win of the season - by beating visiting Hinton 2-1.

Defences were on top in the first half with Hinton successfully repelling a series of Leominster attacks. The home defence, meanwhile, with Marcus Jones in top form, kept a tight rein on the visiting forwards, although Ian Morris saw a shot well saved and Weston Holder had a spectacular 30-yard shot ruled out for offside.

Honours continued to be even until 10 minutes from time when a superb long-range strike from Dylan Barrington put the town side ahead.

But Hinton were quickly back on level terms when Leominster failed to clear a corner and Sean MacManus drove in a powerful shot from the edge of the area.

Leominster kept pressing, however, and earned their reward in the game's last move when Dale Smith deflected in a Matt Jones header for the winning goal.

In the division's other match, Lads Club brought to an end their recent sticky run of form with a 1-0 success over visiting Woofferton at Widemarsh Common.

In an even first half, neither side was able to make much headway as defences were generally on top.

After the break, Lads Club finally got a grip on proceedings and John Buchanan snatched the winner when he found himself in a one-on-one situation with the Woofferton goalkeeper and fired the ball into the corner of the net.
