HEREFORD United forward Rob Purdie could be in line for an international call-up after a string of impressive performances this season.

Purdie has caught the eye of National Game Xl manager Paul Fairclough with his energetic displays in attack and midfield as the former Stevenage boss puts together his squad for a match with Italy at Telford on February 11.

Should Purdie be called up, he is likely to have some familiar faces alongside him with midfielder Ben Smith apparently under consideration, as well and goalkeeper Matt Baker also a regular choice.

Full-back Michael Rose has been one of Fairclough's mainstays in defence, too, and an international call would go some way to compensating the former Manchester United youngster for his absence when the Bulls get their season underway again after an enforced mid-season break.

Following his sending-off against Morecambe, Rose will be suspended for one match and is likely to be replaced by Dean Craven when the Bulls travel to Scarborough for an important Nationwide Conference encounter next Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.

The Bulls were without a game last Saturday due to scheduled opponents Telford's continuing involvement in the FA Cup and have another blank date this Saturday after their elimination from the FA Trophy by Exeter City earlier in the month.

The extended lay-off has brought extra time to recover for United's injury victims and Steve Guinan has been making good progress, as has another long-term absentee, Andy Tretton. Neither is likely to be risked at Scarborough, however, although it is hoped that both will be available for the visit of Burton Albion the following Saturday.

"It's like having two new signings," said United boss Graham Turner.

Although United have been without a game, they have used the time by varying training routines and also played a behind-closed-doors friendly with Oxford United on Monday.
