IN the Government's £1.9 billion local transport budget for 2004/2005 is a six kilometre, £54 million relief road for Weymouth, Dorset - a seaside resort with docks and a ferry terminal.
It is a fair bet more traffic passes, or tries to pass through Hereford in a single week than Weymouth in a whole year!
Hereford as usual was not included in the local transport budget. Why not? Is it because Weymouth's transport authority, councillors and no doubt MP are more passionate and persuasive than their counterparts in Hereford?
Traffic problems in our city get worse by the day with no improvement in sight, a lane scheme in Edgar Street will probably make things worse. A prominent haulage contractor described Hereford and its congestion as 'a boil on the backside of the A49' - pretty apt when you realise it's probably the only place on this major trunk route not blessed with a by-pass.
So come on local authority, councillors and big-talking no action MPs do something constructive for a change; get us a by-pass!
A W SCRIVENS, Ewyas Harold.
