I AM glad to read of the writhing of Rotherwas based companies denied their much-vaunted 'access' road, but seemingly unable to look beyond their blinkered view of the solution.

The destruction of unspoiled countryside, at a stated cost of £6million does NOT - and I emphasise 'NOT' - represent good value for money, or for Herefordshire. Those thwarted in their ambitions must look away from their enslavement by rubber tyres and tarmac!

Have the Rotherwas-based companies concerned ever heard of, or thought of, rail transport?

A main line railway runs right past Rotherwas, and there appears to be sufficient space within the area to accommodate railway sidings, with a link to the main line, and loading facilities. Has this ever been properly investigated, with a proper cost comparison made between it and the construction of a road link?

In days gone by, Rotherwas was served by rail, and reinstatement of the link might prove less costly - and less controversial!

It would behove Paul Keetch, and all concerned, to look again at a rail link for Rotherwas. This could provide better value for money, as well as removing a need for environmental vandalism.

JOHN BENSON,

Ash Close, Marden.
