MORE than 100 ladies and members connected with Herefordshire Freemasons attended Dean Leigh Masters' lodge ladies dinner and were afterwards entertained by the Corra Voce group of young singers from the Worcester area. At the Masonic Ladies' Luncheon Club, John Mayo-Evans, Delphis lodge member and deep sea diver, gave a most interesting account of his experiences during the exploration of the Titanic which sank following a collision with an iceberg in 1912. At Bromsberrow Village Hall, near Ledbury, Keith Handley installed Edward Henson as his successor as Master of Eastnor Lodge. For many years, Delphis lodge (Hereford) members have exchanged visits with Hanliensian lodge and on March 4, a party travelled to Hanley in the Potteries to hear a talk by Granville Angell, RN, about the origin of the Victoria Cross. This included details of the award to a Freemason, W Hewett, when Mate of HMS Beagle. Hewett went on to become a Vice Admiral and Knight Commander of the Bath. It was interesting to learn that of the 1,352 men of the HM Forces who have been awarded the VC, approximately 10% were Freemasons.
