HEREFORDSHIRE won the English Short Mat Bowling Association Inter-County 'A' Champ-ionship by beating Staffordshire in the final at Bletchley.

Herefordshire, who had beaten Norfolk in the semi-finals, won by 26 points to 10 and 204-149 on shots.

The morning session saw Herefordshire lead 12-4 on points and they continued to be on top in the first afternoon session, which they won 6-2, making it almost impossible for Staffordshire to catch up. The final session ended drawn 4-4.

Both their games were won by the pairs teams of Pam and Neil Kellett and Ton Vitale and Andrew Mollett, the fours teams of Hilary Mansell, Sue Stannard, Harold Aubrey and Anthony Rogers, and Brenda Mollett, Sandra Rogers, Phil Rogers and David Gardiner, and singles player John Stannard.

Herefordshire had reached the final by beating Somerset 28-8 and Kent 20-16 before accouting for Norfolk 23-13.

In that match Hereford-shire were trailing but rose to the occasion with a storming finish.

Team captain Les Phillips led Herefordshire thro-ughout the successful campaign.
