Quorn 2 Westfields 1

WESTFIELDS completed their debut season in the Midland Alliance with a defeat at Quorn but will be satisfied with their 13th final placing.

It was a big step up from the West Midlands League Premier Division and they could be in a high enough position to qualify to compete in next season's FA Cup.

The city club included a number of squad members in their starting line up and they kept a clean sheet for the first 62 minutes.

Quorn needed a win to finish fourth and they eventually broke the deadlock when James Watkins lost possession in midfield and the quick-thinking Karl Brennan threaded a pass through to Lee Dawson who rounded keeper Mark Hopkins before putting the ball in the net.

It took a brilliant save by Hopkins to keep out Dean Sargeant's fierce drive. In the 80th minute, however, Dawson outpaced Westfields' defence and crossed for David Puttnam to score from six yards.

The city club rallied and Paul Burton put them back in the game by latching on to a poorly directed pass from Sargeant and netting from an acute angle.

In the dying minutes Burton collected a Mark Hibbard pass and delivered a dangerous cross but the home defence managed to scramble the ball away.
