FORMER skipper Charlie Turner was named player of the season at Luctonians Rugby Club's annual dinner.

The lock-forward has been a first team regular for many years and was a popular winner of the award.

Young flanker Jabs Greasley took the 'rookie of the year' award and first team manager Ken Bemand the 'clubman of the year' award.

Winger Andy Garrod topped the try-scoring list with 19 touchdowns, number eight Owen Price was the choice for '3rd team player of the year' and utility threequarter Fran Southall the '4th team player of the year'.

Former president of the RFU Derek Morgan was the guest speaker and he acknowledged the part played by junior clubs in providing a strong base for the game at senior level.

Mike Ware's vote of thanks to retiring chairman Dave Thomas for his outstanding contribution over the past five years was warmly applauded, and former player Peter Shakespeare, now playing with Spalding, responded on behalf of the guests.

The club's annual general meeting is on Tuesday, June 15.

Luctonians start next season's Powergen Midlands 1 programme with a long away trip to Scunthorpe.

Last season they beat the Lincolnshire club by just one point in the corresponding fixture, but lost the return by 10 points at home.
