TEACHERS did their homework to ensure the past was present at Hereford's all-new St David's Centre.

St David's - which takes students referred from other secondary schools in the county - is now operating at a fully refurbished site in Coningsby Street.

The centre may boast the latest broadband internet links, but time will tell how its most original feature fares - the annalematic sundial gracing the garden.

Students designed the imaginative integration of ancient and modern technologies with inspiration from teachers Erica Pinney and Jean Rendall.

Brian Sharp, numeracy consultant with the LEA, was on hand to help with the maths.

The garden is of archaeological interest being so close to the Blackfriars Monument. English Heritage had to give a go-ahead for the work to begin and the design itself was acclaimed at last year's Malvern Spring Show.

St David's had been operating from a split site in Symonds Street and Eign Road until the refurbished centre was ready. The new two-storey building has room for 35 full-time students.

St David's complements the county's two other Pupil Referral Units - the Aconbury Centre in Hereford and the Priory Centre at Leominster.
