JUNE will see the start of a course aimed at parents and carers who want to help out in primary schools.
Students on the course will learn about the national curriculum, speaking and listening to children, dealing with behaviour problems and many other issues affecting schools.
The course also aims to improve students' study skills and self-confidence, in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
Though there are no exams or assessments at the end of the course, many past students have gone on to further study, or have become more involved with their local school.
The course, called practical helpers in schools, is run by the Workers Educational Association, the national charity founded in 1903 to increase educational opportunities for adults.
It will take place in the family centre at St Martin's Primary School over five weeks, meeting for two hours each week.
