SOMEWHAT in the shadow of its big brother at Hay, but certainly not to be overlooked, Leominster Festival starts on June 3 with a foot stompin', fingersnappin' evening of Irish music at Leominster's Blue Note Caf Bar.

If you have ever been to the small bars of Dublin and watched in fascination and awe as the musicians play endlessly, then you certainly won't want to miss Bang on the Ear.

Enjoy the swinging jazz of the Simon Deeley trio on June 5. It's the first in a series of lunchtime concerts at The Lion Ballroom, which begin at 12.30pm. Centring on the music of the great song composers such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael, this programme is guaranteed to raise your spirits.

Other concerts in the series include a viola recital by Perdy Syers-Gibson on June 7, a song recital by popular local soprano Shiona Cormack on June 8 and rhythm song with Julian Wolstencroft on June 9.

Music in The Priory includes The London Concertante on June 9, an organ recital by Hilary Norris on June 11 and the Birmingham Philharmonic on June 13.

Then there's the light touch of Gyles Brandreth's Wit's End on June 12 and a talk, Life on the Edge, with explorer Benedict Allen inspiring you to take life by the horns on June 10 at The Royal Oak ballroom.

It's a programme that's peppered with interest and variety. Call for a brochure on 01568 611190.
