I WOULD like to echo the sentiments expressed by Gillian Herbert regarding the over zealous mowing of our country lanes which are one of the many attractions of the county.

I saw the devastation along the Linley Green verges as I was attempting to carry out a botanical survey in the Linley Green area.

Having been disturbed by this, I returned home to Coddington to find that we had been treated in the same way!

The red campion was just coming into flowers and the stitchwort and cow parsley at their best while the bluebells had a couple more weeks to delight us but they were whisked away. Let us hope the cowslips and primroses had time to set seed before they were shaved off.

While I appreciate the need to mow in critical places on corners for better visibility, and maybe on main roads, is it really necessary to turn all the verges in the country lanes into suburban lawns, as that is what will happen if this very early mowing regime is continued.

Money spent on mending the potholes rather than cutting off the flowers down the lanes would be a better use of our council tax. If polytunnels don't drive the tourists away, then lack of flowery country lanes may!
