Ledbury Library was evacuated for an hour on Friday because of a gas leak in Bye Street.
Staff in the Elizabeth Barrett Browning building, which houses the library, smelt gas and called Transco.
They were advised to turn off the gas supply in the Victorian building and to evacuate the premises.
Staff remained outside until 1pm, while Transco workers identified the source of the leak, which was just outside the library door.
A trench was dug on the narrow pavement to reach the pipe.
The High Street junction with Bye Street was narrowed to one lane for several hours, in order for the repairs to be carried out in safety by Transco staff.
