A total of £7,500 has been raised to help build a school in Kenya thanks to the efforts of Herefordshire pupils.

Students at Fairfield High School, Peterchurch, collected funds by agreeing to go without Christmas presents in exchange for charitable donations.

The money raised will fund the building of new classrooms at the Naisoya School in the Masai Mara region, as well as a water plant.

Headteacher Chris Barker said: "At the moment they have to travel three quarters of a mile every day to fetch water. This will no longer be the case."

The link between the two schools started when geography teacher Daphne Jones, went to Kenya as part of a training exercise.

Recently, Simon Koikai, the head of Naisoya School, visited Fairfield High.

"We learnt a lot more from him, than he did from us," said Mr Barker. "The effect he had on the school was extraordinary."
