WHEN Bromyard traders noticed a broken window on their high street, many thought drunken yobs had struck.

But the boarded window at a former shoe store wasn’t due to vandalism – only a merry young couple having a smashing time.

Local businessman, Tony Burt, confirmed last week that a lovestruck couple caused the window smash.

The pair, who were having a laugh and cuddle, lost their balance and fell through the window of the former Peter Briggs store.

Mr Burt was called to the scene with his wife, Brigid, whose paintings and pictures fill the windowspace of the vacant store.

But the pair were confronted with the embarrassed couple, who could not stop apologising and offered to pay for the damage.

Mr Burt, who revealed the story on the internet, said the couple were good-natured following the incident on December 27.

“It was a young couple who, having a laugh and a cuddle, overbalanced and fell through the window,” he said.

“To their great credit they called the police themselves, owned up to it and have offered to pay for all the damage.”

Brigid, who said the couple were in their early 20s, also saw the funny side and put the incident down to festive merriment.

“We all huddled up in a doorway and sorted things with a very patient policeman,” she said.
