A PARKINSON’S Disease sufferer who spent more than £6,000 on two beds that are too big for his bedroom before missing the cancellation period for a refund is warning others not to make the same mistake.

Robert Prince, aged 83, who lives with his wife Margaret in Moorfields, Hereford, placed the order after a salesman from Craftmatic Adjustable Bed Company spent five hours at his home.

But the beds, which cost £6,670, leave little room for the couple to get in and out of their bedroom.

Mr Prince said: “The length of these beds are some four or five inches longer than the beds that were already in there and there’s not a lot of room to allow us to get in and out of the room.”

But when he contacted the company to ask for a refund, Mr Prince was told that he was outside the cancellation period, which started when the order is placed, not when the beds were delivered.

“I think they should have made it clear when we placed the order that we had very little time to contact the company if there was a problem,” Mr Prince added.

“You can’t make your mind up about a product before it has been delivered to you.”

To make matters worse, the couple have since found out that they could have bought another type of bed – which allows users to elevate their head or feet – for a lower price.

Alistair Gibbs, managing director of TGP Disable Aids Ltd based in Plough Lane, Hereford, said: “We sell those sorts of beds which we would be retailing at around £1,000 each.”

Craftmatic, an American-owned company which is based in Oxfordshire, told the Hereford Times that it had received a letter of complaint from Mr Prince.

But a spokesman, who declined to give his name, said the company could uphold its decision if it was not contacted within the 10-day cancellation period. Craftmatic refused to answer questions from the Hereford Times about the price of its beds.
