This is a reader's letter published in the Hereford Times on October 24.
BLAMING rainfall or soil types does not excuse farmers or contractors who leave a muddy field with a tractor with or without a trailer that has mud on the wheels that is then deposited for up to a quarter mile.

True, some soil is washed off fields in heavy rain, but the size of agricultural vehicles and their heavily cleated tyres means that a huge amount of mud is carried on to and left on the road.

It is this mud that should either be cleaned off the tyres before entering the road or cleaned off the road immediately before it becomes a hazard.
Saying that farmers are simply keeping food on our plates does not wash, especially when potatoes are used for alcohol or crisps! I don’t expect to find spilt fuel outside a refinery!
