MAJOR works are planned for an historic building in one Herefordshire town.

An application for listed building consent has been submitted to Herefordshire Council for works to be carried out to Nunwell Priory in Bromyard.

The proposed works include re-roofing, replacing existing roof coverings with natural slates. Additional repair works are also planned to be carried out to the timber roof structure, while an en-suite could be installed on the second floor of the building.

A heritage statement and design and access statement accompanying the application said the works are needed at the grade II listed house in Bromyard's Pump Street to tackle water ingress, leaks, and damp.

These appear to be causing "the beginnings of more significant damp issues" inside the home, the statement said, with historic repairs and other works causing further issues.

These include current concrete roof tiles which, the statement said, are "holding onto excessive moisture" as they are porous.

The statement said the modern repairs and alterations to the roof are "of poor standard" and will ultimately cause further deterioration and potential structural concern if left unrectified.

There is also general deterioration in the original timber roof, the statement dais, with damage, rot, and weak structure of some concern. The statement said this is exasperated by the water ingress and additional weight they are carrying after previous repair work.

Comments will close on the application on October 24, with a target determination date of November 5.
