FIRE crews have been called to tackle a fire in the base of an oak tree in Hereford.

A crew from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was called to the fire, which involved an oak tree, earlier this afternoon.

One fire crew attended the scene, in Copsewood Drive, from Hereford Fire Station, not long after midday.

The fire was extinguished using a knapsack and axe.

The oak tree was already rotten, and no one was injured in the incident.

A spokesperson for HWFRS said: "A HWFRS crew from Hereford Fire Station was called to a fire in the open in Copsewood Drive, Hereford. A small fire in the base of a rotten oak tree was extinguished using a knapsack and an axe. There were no casualties and no other emergency services were required."

The crew left the scene shortly after 1pm.
