A MUCH-loved Leominster bakery has announced that it will soon be baking its last batch, after 70 years of trading.
Central Bakery, based in West Street, announced on Facebook that after over half a century, and three generations of the same family, the bakery will close its doors at the end of September.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that Central Bakery will be closing its doors for the final time at the end of September, with the coffee shop closing first in a few weeks time," the announcement said.
“After nearly 70 years of trading as Central Bakery this decision has been a very difficult and emotional one.
"From three generations of the Burke family and a lot of loyal staff (some who have been there for most of their working lives) it has definitely not been an easy decision.” The statement said.

“Since covid and the loss of my dad, David, things have been very hard.”
The bakery added that rising costs of ingredients and utilities had contributed to the decision to close the business. It also cited the dwindling footfall they have experienced due to the development of Leominster High Street and Corn Square.
The statement added that the family had loved “being one of the focal points of Leominster” and thanked customers for their loyal support over the years.
Lovers of the bakery were encouraged to continue visiting them whilst still open, adding "grab your favourite Central Bakery goodies whilst you can”.
Commenting on the emotional post, Helen Richards said: “So sad to hear this but understandable.

“I was a Saturday girl there in the seventies. I learned to wear comfy shoes to work and my colleagues learned I couldn't cut bread to make a sandwich.
“Very best wishes to staff and owners for the future. This café is so very much a part of Leominster’s identity.”
Michelle Sevier, reflecting on the sad news said: “You will be greatly missed best bread, sausage rolls and iced buns memories going back to the 1970’s.
"Birthdays on a work day won’t be the same without the delicious selection of cakes. Best wishes to you all.”
