I WAS saddened to read Sir Bill Wiggin’s article published in the Hereford Times (August 3).

I have rarely seen so much hate and bile expressed towards those who simply wish to see a better world.

Both those proposing an extension of the Ultra Low Emission Zone scheme in Uxbridge (actually initiated by a Conservative mayor, one Boris Johnson) and the Greens and Independents on the council (who remembered that cyclists also use the roads and are entitled to a small sliver of our city space) are depicted as anti-driver in his sorry diatribe.

That some people are trying to be proactive in improving the lot for our children appears to be entirely alien to him.

Finally, Sir Bill has saved special vitriol for Just Stop Oil. Whatever you may think of their tactics (and they have never used violence, in contrast to the Suffragettes), history will judge them more kindly than Rishi Sunak and his decision to grant more than 100 licences for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. This is a disgraceful act of environmental vandalism which is all the more inexcusable as it runs counter to all educated scientific opinion.

When someone shows you who they are, then you should believe them.

I suppose that Sir Bill is to be applauded for his honesty, but I genuinely cannot understand why anyone would admit in writing that he cares so little for the future of our children’s generation.
