PICTURES of flooded Somerset levels appal me (with reference to jailed farmer John Price).
I have a son living in Wells whose farm workshop is perilously near to the levels and he fears for his equipment and projects. I lived and worked in north Germany in the Butjardigen peninsula east of Friesland for eight years.

There they have a system of dykes and pumping stations built into them which control the water levels inland, even though it lies at one point three meters below mean sea level.
Proper ongoing infrastructure investment and the region never floods.
I also lived in Lucton, two miles from Kingsland for three years and know how the Lugg used to flood.
