The court heard from prosecutor Mark Hambling that the 62-year-old had sent three messages which were of an indecent or grossly offensive nature for the purpose of causing harassment, alarm, or distress, to a person in Hereford on September 13.
Evans, of Mayberry Avenue, Hereford, was handed a 12-month community order and ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, with magistrates saying that they had taken his guilty plea into account when deciding on the penalty.
He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £185 and a £114 victim surcharge, which is used to help fund services supporting victims of crime.
The mobile phone used to send the messages, which was seized by police, was ordered to be forfeited and destroyed.
