ORCHARDS in Herefordshire will soon be welcoming visitors to enjoy traditional cider and perry from local makers.

A touch of spring sunshine has helped the apple blossom on its way, ready for the Big Apple association’s springtime celebration of the landscape around Putley, where local orchards are famous for their fruit.

The series of bank holiday ‘Blossomtime’ events this weekend have been arranged to celebrate the annual orchard blossom day on Monday, May 1.

On April 30, visitors can enjoy ploughman’s lunches served at Court farm in Aylton and a pruning demonstration in the orchards. Homemade refreshments will be available, as well as guides to show groups around the orchards.

In the afternoon, Dr David Marshall will be giving a talk on the ‘Global Story of the Apple’ at Aylton Church and cider enthusiasts can make their way to Putley parish hall for cider and perry tasting, where they will have a chance to sample 130 competition entries together with afternoon teas.

Monday’s events will be held at Woolhope Cockshoot and Fosbury fruit farm, with lunch and tea provided by Ledbury young farmers and Putley women’s institute.
