A new documentary focussing on the Duke of York's interview on Newsnight is to air as Channel 4 unveils its alternative programming for the King's coronation next month.

In the two-part showing, BBC journalist Emily Maitlis will speak about how she came to grill Prince Andrew over his relationship with billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in the now infamous interview.

The two episodes of Andrew – The Problem Prince will feature archive footage, an interview with former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister and access to Palace insiders.

The documentary is being executively produced by Maitlis and will also feature former BBC News presenter Jon Sopel.

Prince Andrew denies contact with Virginia Giuffre in BBC Newsnight interview

In the Newsnight interview four years ago, Prince Andrew denied having sex with or even meeting the then-17-year-old Virginia Giuffre.

He then went on to say that he spent the day in question at a Pizza Express in Woking for a party for one of his daughters.

Ms Giuffre claimed that Prince Andrew was sweating heavily when they danced together at a London nightclub.

Andrew told Emily Maitlis that he could not sweat because of a medical condition he had received during the Falkland War.

Last year, the duke settled the sexual assault case out of court with the agreement not being an admission of guilt.

Channel 4 programme Frankie Boyle's Farewell To The Monarchy to look back at the institution's 1,000-year history

Frankie Boyle will also be hosting another programme that will look at the Royal Family's 1,000-year history in a documentary called Frankie Boyle’s Farewell To The Monarchy.

Boyle’s documentary will also ask whether the royal family “has a place in today’s world” and “should it continue?”.

The one-off show was originally titled Frankie Boyle: Monarchy when it was first announced as part of Channel 4's 40-year anniversary.

However, the show was shelved after the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96 in Balmoral.

The Windsors Coronation Special announced as part of Channel 4's coronation programming

Last month, The Windsors Coronation Special was announced and will see Harry Enfield as the king invite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to his special day as the comedy show returns after three years off the air.

Channel 4’s chief content officer, Ian Katz, said: “Channel 4 exists to provide viewers with an alternative, so as the nation is engulfed by pomp, circumstance and forelock-tugging, we’ll be offering a rather less reverential slate of programmes including Frankie Boyle’s case against the monarchy and The Windsors’ scabrous satirical take on the coronation.”

Channel 4 added that its programming “will provide an escape from the pomp and ceremony” of the coronation.
