Boat Race: Medical update provided on Oxford crew members

Oxford rower Felix Drinkall was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after collapsing at the end of the men’s 2023 race.

It is not known which other athlete received medical attention after the event but it has been confirmed that “both are doing well.”

Drinkall was in visible distress as his teams rowed him to the bank of the river to receive medical attention.

Teammate Tassilo Von Meuller had to be reassured on the BBC's live coverage that Drinkall was “recovering”.

Speaking to Sue Barker, he said: "I don't know how Felix is. He wasn't great in the boat. I hope he is alright.

"It is not the result we wanted to come out with. It is a battle between two sides so one will lose"

Barker interjected to say: "We are hearing that Felix is recovering, we will give you an update when we know it."

Fears were allayed by Boat Race officials on Sunday evening, however, via a short statement.

It read: “Two Oxford University Boat Club athletes received medical attention following today’s Men’s Race.

“We are pleased to confirm that both are doing well and we would like to thank the RNLI, St John’s Ambulance and the London Ambulance service.”

Cambridge's celebrations were subdued after they powered to their fourth victory in five Boat Races with a gutsy effort against a resilient Oxford crew in the 168th edition of the race.

The winners had rudder issues before the race and both blue boats earned early warnings from umpire Tony Reynolds as Oxford, with the weight advantage, pulled ahead.

A bold move from Cambridge cox Jasper Parish paid off when judging the conditions, he decided to steer his crew closer to the bank in Fulham hoping to find friendlier waters.

That allowed Cambridge to take a half-length’s lead, and while Oxford would not let their opponents get away, it turned out to be an inspired decision from Parish as Cambridge carried their advantage over the finish line.
