MEMBERS of Facebook nostalgia group We Grew Up in Hereford have been sharing their memories of a little green hut in the middle of a Hereford park that used to sell sweet treats.

A little shop on the path around Castle Green, known as the "Little Green Hut" or the "Ice Cream Kiosk" served hungry kids and adults on hot summer days for decades.

It was run by Mr Wathen who also famously ran a sweet shop in King Street, near the Cathedral.

Many a Cathedral School pupil would head there after a day at school, or during their walk back after an afternoon at the sports ground at Wyeside.

RELATED STORIES:

Some of the members in the Hereford Times group have been reminiscing about their childhood treats.

Mary Hughes said it brought back many memories of walks on a Sunday round the Castle Green and especially the joy of the special ice cream on the way.

Michael Lyons remembered it well from the 1950's and 60's. He said he used to go past it five days a week on his way from Hinton to St Owen's School in Symonds Street.

Mr Lyons said: "The Castle Green and the right hand side of the path down to the Victoria Bridge was beautiful and full of little flowers.

Sara Radziejowska said that she loved Wathen's ice cream and that nothing had ever come close to the taste.

Sue Price and Christine Gawler agreed about the ice cream and Ms Price said it was "the best ice cream ever."

The hut was known not only for its delicious original recipe ice cream, but for a special cider flavoured iced treat.

Patricia Orton said that it was the only place she could buy a cider ice lolly.

She said: "I loved those lollies. I remember riding my mum's bicycle all the way from Whitecross just to buy one of them.

"I wasn't big enough to ride it properly, I had to stand on the pedals all the way because no way could I reach the seat."
