A HEREFORDSHIRE gin company is launching a new limited-edition drink in celebration of its new year's plans for packaging.

Penrhos Spirits, based in Kington at Penrhos Farm, was launched in 2018 Herefordshire farmers Dickie Williams and Charlie Turner.

They use fresh ingredients grown on one fruit farm by farming families who have come together in the pursuit of delicious spirits and making use of fruit which would otherwise be discarded and unable to be sold in supermarkets.

The spirit company is rehoming its award-winning spirits in custom-made 100 per cent aluminium bottles, rolling out from winter 2022 into 2023.

They have been designed and crafted with a specialist producer to be bespoke, spirit safe, and fully recyclable, reusable, and refillable.

As part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability and improving the carbon footprint at Penrhos, the team decided to create the aluminium bottles to provide consumers with a more sustainable option to glass bottles.

Almost 75 per cent of aluminium ever produced is still in the material loop today, said a spokesperson from Penrhos Spirits.

A recent study by researchers at University of Southampton also concluded that glass is the least sustainable bottling option, with recycled aluminium the most sustainable choice on the market today.

OTHER NEWS:

Penrhos' range of spirits will permanently transition to aluminium bottles throughout 2023.

To celebrate the switch, Penrhos has also introduced a limited-edition Wonky Raspberry flavour, using the excess, wobbly raspberries from the farm over summer 2022.

Mr Turner said: "At Penrhos Spirits, we are always looking for ways to improve our sustainability in both the orchards and distillery.

"This launch marks an exciting moment in the Penrhos journey, and if we can do it as a relatively small, growing brand, then we want to raise a challenge to the wider drinks community too, to get on board."

The introduction of aluminium bottles follows the launch of 2.5 litre refillable pouches for trade earlier in 2022, requiring less energy than glass bottles to make and transport, and fully recyclable for on trade customers.

Penrhos Spirits aluminium bottles will be available from PenrhosSpirits.co.uk from January.
