AN 'UNKNOWN soldier' has appeared in a Hereford street as Remembrance Day approaches.

Last month, police and crime commissioner John Campion commissioned the creation of six unknown Tommy soldiers that have now been placed outside of police stations in Hereford, Malinsgate, Malvern, Kidderminster and Shrewsbury as well as West Mercia Police Headquarters.

As we approach Remembrance Day, Mr Campion wants to encourage the communities of West Mercia to get creative and pin their poppy on their local unknown Tommy Statue.

The unknown soldiers have already seen many poppies pinned from local knitting and community groups, schools and church play groups. The PCC wants to see everyone in the community get creative and illustrate what remembrance means to them by creating a poppy out of any weatherproof material they can find.

Mr Campion said: “I am pleased to see that so many poppies have made their way on the unknown Tommy statues across West Mercia. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community who has already pinned their poppy to mark what Remembrance symbolises to them.

“My team have been out in the community to see first-hand the great work you are doing to create your poppies. We have seen knitted poppies from local knit and natter groups to hand crafted foam master pieces from little stars play group.

"I would like to encourage everyone in the community to get behind this project and get creative and pin your poppy before November 10 to honour the servicemen and women – past and present.”
