A HEREFORDSHIRE pub has won another major award despite the challenges it, and the wider industry, face, including staff shortages and the cost of living crisis.

The Riverside Inn in Aymestrey, between Leominster and Leintwardine, has won the best sustainable pub award at the Great British Pub Awards 2022.

This latest accolade follows on from chef/patron Andy Link winning pub chef of the year and West Midlands pub of the year at the National Pub and Bar Awards during the summer.

He said despite recent difficulties such as coronavirus, staff shortages and the cost of living crisis, winning an award makes the team's effort worthwhile.

Awards judges said localism and sustainability is an ethos embraced across both the food and drink menus at the pub, with dishes created to showcase the region’s finest seasonal produce.

They said the pub has also created nature walks for guests and has a two-acre smallholding including bees, pigs, chickens, a heritage orchard and two kitchen gardens, which help provide a bounty of ingredients for its talented chefs.

On top of that, there is also an excellent waste reduction strategy at the pub, including whole animal butchery, composting for the kitchen gardens and analysing food waste to create ingredients such as carrot top pesto.

Judges also praised the pub's exciting and wonderful drinks offer and its green community fund which sees customer donations help fund local projects such as tree and meadow planting.

Mr Link said: "Having all our efforts to make the pub more sustainable recognised on a UK-wide basis is hugely encouraging.

“Our aim is to create an inn that supports and showcases local produce. We strive to make The Riverside valued for its sustainable ethos and dedication to the region’s producers, farms and suppliers.

"I’d like to thank the entire team for all their efforts in helping make this aim a reality, and to the local and wider community for supporting us.”

The Great British Pub Awards judges selected The Riverside as a finalist having been to visit the establishment earlier in the year. The inn was chosen from a record number of entries throughout the UK.
