A TEENAGER crashed his car while more than twice the drink-drive limit after meeting up with friends, a court has been told.

Kieran Hughes admitted one count of driving while over the alcohol limit when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Prosecutor Mark Hambling said police were called to a crash on the A438 at in Whitney-on-Wye at 5pm on September 17.

Suspecting he had been drinking, officers breath tested Hughes, and he was taken into custody after failing the roadside test.

An evidential breath test taken at Hereford police station revealed he had 74 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the legal limit of

Philip Cornell, for Hughes, said the 19-year-old does not have a drinking problem but had been depressed recently due to his lack of employment.

"He is hoping to get employment and he has prospects," Mr Cornell said.

"He was with friends that day and made the wrong decision. He now faces the consequences, and bearing in mind where he lives, the effect of this disqualification will make things difficult as far as getting work is concerned.

"This is a blip that he will hopefully never forget."

Jughes, who is of Gladestry, Kington, was disqualified from driving for 20 months and fined £120. He must also pay prosecution costs of 135 and a £48 victim surcharge.
