EXCITING plans to restore Hereford Cathedral Close are crucial to the city's future, according to councillors.
A £5.6million restoration project has won unanimous approval from Herefordshire Council planners.
Called the "opportunity of a lifetime" by the Dean of Hereford the Very Rev Michael Tavinor, the project will see new gates, railings and paving.
Funding for the scheme, developed by Robert Myers Associates, of Kington, and cathedral architects Robert Kilgour & Associates, is nearly finalised and councillors were full of praise in granting permission last week.
"This proposition is as important and as exciting as the Edgar Street Grid, if not more," said Councillor Chris Chappell.
"It's possibly the only cathedral in the country that's going to get this sort of treatment in the next few years and I find it terrifically exciting for the city and the city centre."
