PLANS to build apartments at the site of the former H Samuel jewellers in Chester city centre have been approved.

A bid had been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council to build six one-bedroom apartments at the building on the corner of Foregate Street and Frodsham Street, next door to the Planet Doughnut shop.

A few years ago, the site had been home, on the ground floor, to the H Samuel jewellers store on the street corner, plus health store Holland & Barrett. Currently the site is home to electronic supplies store The Phone Shop, while the former Holland & Barrett store, which for a brief time became Warren James Jewellers, is now empty.

The application sought to convert the upper floors of the three-storey building from vacant offices and storage into apartments. The ground floor area would continue to be for commercial units.

Access for residents would be via an alleyway between the Max Spielman photo store and the Hello Nails beauty store on Frodsham Street. The alleyway itself, planners stated, would be "suitably improved, lit and secured", with additional CCTV and provision for cycle storage.

No objections to the plans were made.

Cheshire West and Chester Council approved the plans, subject to conditions relating to building works, such as limiting noise levels during construction.
