A LEARNER driver was caught driving while unsupervised on a busy Hereford main road after picking his car up from its MOT.

Joshua Skyrme admitted driving without insurance or a licence when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

He was stopped and spoken to by police after they spotted him driving a Volkswagen Golf on Hereford's Roman Road on December 9, prosecutor Melanie Winterflood said.

Skyrme told officers he was following his partner, who was at the wheel of another car, home after picking the car up from its MOT.

He admitted that he only had a provisional licence, and the car did not have L plates.

Speaking on his own behalf, 29-year-old Skyrme said he could only apologise for his actions.

"It is the only time I have driven the car and it was because we had no other way of getting it back from the MOT," he said.

"It is no excuse and I should not have done it. I have not driven a car since."

Magistrates told Skyrme that it is a serious offence and that he and his partner should have taken a taxi to collect the car.

Skyrme, of Fakenham Drive, Hereford, was fined £207 and received six penalty points. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
