A DRINK-DRIVER has been banned from the roads after he was stopped for his poor driving on a busy Herefordshire main road.

Matthew Stills admitted drink-driving when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Police were travelling along the A417 towards Ledbury when they became spotted Stills behind the wheel of a black Volkswagen Golf and pulled him over due to his manner of driving, prosecutor Eleanor Peart said.

Stills, who officers said had been rapidly accelerating and showing poor lane discipline, was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

He admitted that he had last had a drink 30 minutes before driving and an evidential test in custody revealed he had 79 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

"He was carrying a passenger and there is evidence of an unacceptable standard of driving," Miss Peart said.

George Cousins, for Stills, said the 36-year-old had fully complied with officers.

"He accepts it was a mistake that day," Mr Cousins said.

"He is losing his job as a result of this, but he does have a couple of interviews for new jobs coming up that will not require him to drive."

Stills, of Carlton Road, Gloucester, was disqualified from driving for 19 months and fined £120. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
