A FORKLIFT driver was caught with cannabis in his home during a police search.

Lee Jones admitted possessing cannabis when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Police executed a search warrant at his home in Hereford's College Green on January 19, prosecutor Eleanor Peart said, seizing items including ice cream tubs with four foil wraps of cannabis and another small amount of the class B drug.

In interview, Jones admitted the cannabis belonged to him and said it was for personal use.

Philip Cornell, for Jones, said the 44-year-old had entered an early guilty plea.

"Quite frankly even if I sat down now, I think your guidelines would indicate what you would be thinking for him," he said.

"He lives with his teenager and works full time as a forklift operator. Before that, he spent 23 years working on chicken farms. He is a responsible and hard working person."

The court heard Jones had turned to alcohol after his relationship had failed eight years ago, but that he is now seeking help with this from Turning Point.

"He takes cannabis to calm himself down and help with the alcohol," Mr Cornell said.

"He is doing his very best to help himself with his problems and he is no harm to anyone. I think he deserves a lot of credit for that."

Jones was fined £185 and ordered to pay costs of £185 and a £34 victim surcharge. The cannabis was ordered to be forfeited and destroyed.
