A MAN has died in a crash which has closed the A49 in Herefordshire, police have said.

Oficers from West Mercia Police were called to a single-vehicle crash on the A49 at Harewood End, between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye, shortly after 7am this morning (Wednesday).

The car hit a wall, officers said, and the road has been closed since.

Ambulance crews also attended and treated the driver, who was a man, but he died at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: "His next of kin have been informed.

"Road closures are in place for investigation work but are expected to be removed shortly."

One ambulance, a paramedic officer, and two BASICS doctors were sent to the scene.

On arrival they found one patient, a man, who was the driver of the car.

Crews were told he had suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance staff it became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene," a spokesperson said.

Two of Nicky Maddy Coaches' school buses were affected by the road closures on the A49.

The JKH215 Garway route to John Kyrle High School in Ross-on-Wye warned it could be late to all stops due to the "unrelated road traffic incident on the A49 causing access to route delays".

Similar delays were expected on MON211 to Monmouth Comprehensive.
