A HAY-ON-WYE pub has been awarded a Good Food Award for its culinary excellence for the third year running.

The Old Black Lion, in Lion Street, has been awarded a Gold Seal Award in the gastro pubs category, which is based on customer reviews.

Gill and James Walton only took the pub over in July this year, saying there were "absolutely delighted" with the accolade.

"This is recognition of the hard work that Mark Turton our head chef and his team, along with all our staff, have put in to make The Old Black Lion such a fantastic destination for food lovers.

"We specialise in using locally-sourced and freshly prepared ingredients and this award is recognition that our diners appreciate our wonderful food.

"We would like to say a special thank you to all of the guests who have voted for us and have visited us since we took over."

The Old Black Lion serves an à la carte menu during both lunch and evening from Monday to Saturday and a fixed price Sunday menu.

Seasonal dishes currently include pan-seared guinea fowl breast served with fondant potato, spinach, roast artichoke and guinea fowl jus or gnocchi served with mixed mushrooms, tarragon cream and toasted seeds.

The Old Black Lion was also recently awarded the Trip Advisor Travellers’ Choice award for both the restaurant and rooms and currently holds a One Star AA Rosette.
