THE passion and vehemence expressed by Mariam Njeri in her piece in the Hereford Times for Black History Month appears to lament a bygone age.
Where are the myriad of examples of current swathes of white-inflicted oppression towards black people she asserts? Is Britain awash with racist attacks? Have I missed the news?
She quotes the fact her ancestors were enslaved, but fails to mention such enslavement would not have been made possible were it not for fellow Africans rounding up opposing tribes for awaiting European adventurers and traders.
Many Africans became facilitators to slavers.
She complains of watching her “brothers killed on TV and sent to their graves”, but fails to mention the fact that 94 per cent of black homicide victims in the US, for example, die at the hands of other black people. The statistics aren’t too dissimilar in the UK.
This manufactured “Racism is everywhere” argument has to stop. It is helping no one.
Further, if you’re going to have a history month devoted to the oppression of black people at least ensure it’s balanced and factually correct.
