A FORMER chip shop and Polish street food takeaway is on the market after impressive renovations following a fire.

Agents Sunderlands said 16 Union Street comprises a ground floor retail or service property offering bright, well presented open plan space.

"The entire premises has been decorated to a very high standard by the current owners, and benefits from skylights allowing ample natural light, efficient electric heaters and good frontage onto a popular trading street," Sunderlands said.

"To the rear of the property is a well presented kitchen and staff area, with an external patio area at the rear included. One parking space is included with the property."

Formerly the home of the Crispy Cod fish and chip shop, 16 Union Street was latterly home to Polska Street Food, which suffered a fire thought to have been caused by a deep fat fryer just two months after opening, in August 2020.

At the time, owner Owner Jana Sobczyk, 32, said their reputation had just started to make them a popular place for takeaway food, including Polish options such as zapiekanka, an open toasted sandwich with mushrooms and cheese.

Ms Sobczyk, of Cagebrook Avenue, said: "We just opened at 4pm and our chef just came to the front and he noticed that there was a fire in the fryer.

"I was sitting in there but didn't smell anything.

"When we saw the fire our chef grabbed the fire extinguisher and tried to stop the fire, it stopped for a second but after that the fire was bigger.

"It's bad, everything needs to be replaced in the front. All the plastics were melted, ceilings need to be done, walls, counters, absolutely everything."

The newly-renovated premises, which Sunderlands said would be an excellent retail or office location, is available to let for £16,000 per annum.
