A MAJOR bridge in the Caerleon area is set to be closed to all traffic, as part of essential repair work.

A public notice issued by Newport City Council stated the Caerleon Bridge would be closed "between October 17 and 31 (weather permitting) between 7.30am and 5.30pm".

However, the council has since confirmed that the bridge will in fact be closed for just one day – Sunday, October 17.

The closure will be in place from 7.30am to 6.30pm, to allow investigations and repair work to be carried out.

A council spokeswoman has said that this work is weather dependant, and should conditions prove unsuitable this coming weekend, a second date – Sunday October 31, will be used instead.

While the bridge will be closed to motorists travelling in both directions for the duration of the works, it will remain open in between the two dates.

Diversion signs will be put in place while work is carried out.

It is believed that the diversion will take motorists via the B4236, M4 junction 25, A4042, Ponthir Road to Caerleon in both directions.
