A MEMORIAL bench has been placed at a Herefordshire cricket club in memory of a founding member.

Burghill Tillington and Weobley cricket club, who are sponsored by PAF Hereford Limited, Pension and Investment Consultants recently unveiled the memorial bench for John “JD” Downes.

It was fitting that his widow Pat, who was instrumental in supporting John at the club in the early years was able to unveil the bench.

The club also took the opportunity to unveil a memorial plaque for the area which also houses benches for the late Desiree and Mason Helme, Jack Roberts and Len Sparrow.

The benches flank a splendid scarlet oak tree which was planted in honour of John Campbell some 30 years ago.

A statement from the club said: “His commitment and dedication to building one of Herefordshire’s most beautiful cricket facilities is a lasting testament to his great character.

“Together with Mason Helme, the Reverend Peter Lind-Jackson and Len Sparrow, the foundations were laid for what you see today at Brick House Farm.”
